its definitely been a while since ive posted a mixtape for you pals. im currently in seoul, and i want to explode at how much i love korea. ive traveled quite a bit in my lifetime, but i can easily shoot this city to the top of my favorite list. right now im sitting in one of seoul’s kajillion adorable coffee shops, sipping on my second coffee (the second was “serviceuhhh” aka free, thank you^^). the entire city is very young, but this area in particular is filled with energy and young people 24/7, as well as cute coffee shops, live street musicians and bars. i thought i would make you a playlist of some kindie music, similar to the relaxing music heard in coffee shops. you already know i love 10cm, and yesterday in a coffee shop they only played 10cm just because i like them so much! download here : i hope you enjoy.

i have a funny feeling that kura is going to make quite the ripple in the blog music scene in the coming months. the trio is from denmark, and has this spacey but smooth sound. if you like the xx, you will most definitely enjoy kura as well. the music video for anchor, directed by kristian touborg, is super intriguing. take a look and a listen! visit their facebook page for more info/songs.

thanks to my friend, audrey, ive been pulled out of my music rut which has lasted for quite some time. i literally spent the summer listening to the same two songs on repeat. she introduced me to this korean duo, which goes by 10cm. together, kwon jung yeol and yoon cheol jong, make cute, catchy and honest ballads. i listened once, i listened 50 more times. download: americano and 오늘밤은 어둠이 무서워요.

their take away show was filmed by recandplay so i decided to look into this a bit more. they film bands and artists playing spontaneous sets in and around seoul, whether that be an echoey underpass or a cozy cafe. i discovered a ton of talented new acts, but the gorgeous gal of russian red (who is actually from spain) and her sweet voice particularly caught my attention.

as i’m preparing to leave for china, my curiosity for the chinese music scene peaked. you don’t hear much about said scene, but there’s got to be something going on amongst the enormous sea of people. through the push shove, a blog which documents chinese youth culture, i found a playlist of what was primarily chinese punk bands. PAIRS was indeed a standout from the bunch. a powerful noise band with some flipping catchy tracks; my favorite being ‘i want to die in the ocean’. their entire EP is up for download for free on their bandcamp

the shanghai-based duo consists of xiao zhong, drummer originally from australia, and ‘f’ on guitar. xiao zhong explains that “the scene in shanghai is pretty active, but not as active as a city of 22 million could, or should be. lack of organized venues seems to be a big problem. a lot of bands here do a lot of DIY stuff, give out their CD’s for free at their launch, trying to do something different to get noticed/throw a nice party”.

why are you drawn to making the kind of music you make? “we make the music we make as it’s pretty much all we can make. f’s guitar playing style is pretty strange, and she is learning the guitar, so right now it’s all simple and fast as that’s her playing style. basic chords and cocksuckery, really.”

what other chinese bands should goldzmine readers check out? yantiao, the instigation, guijian, death to giants, hotter than teppanyaki, small train heart, your boyfriend sucks.

battles is a good way to kick off the summer. so upbeat you want to hop out of bed and eat chocolate a sundae for breakfast. this song and video are off their forthcoming album, gloss drop, which comes out on the 7th of june. im noticing a pattern, that everytime summer rolls around and im on a music hunt, new yorkers are always reliable. battles’ mathrock take on tropical sounds comes through most in wall street (mp3). whilst sundome (mp3) has a relaxing echo of island music.

to keep it simple: i think mixtapes are really cute. ive always been fond of taking your time to make something for someone. i made a playlist of songs (for YOU!) that are nice to listen to, while you let your face remember what it feels like to soak up some sun, sit outside and eat some frozen yogurt. picnic season is right around the corner, and i am so bloody excited. to download the mixtape, click HERE

a bunch of pals and i got together to put on a “super dope” vintage sale. we held the event in jo’s lofty open space, called COAT CHECK. we ended up being about 17 or so people selling mostly vintage clothing, with a side of cupcakes and special cookies. alex joined in to sell his vintage taxidermy, HERCULES TAXIDERMY, which is so beautiful, and what is going straight to the top of my birthday wishlist.

unfortunately, three uninvited guests showed up; hail/snow/rain, but the turnout was still great! it made me really happy to see some of my most prized finds bringing smiles to strangers and friends. good music, laughs, marley the kitty, and a strict cookie diet made for a nice day. hopefully more of these to come!

i’ve come down with a.. TERRIBLE GOD KNOWS WHAT that makes my nose leak all over and cough all over and sneeze all over. seasonal allergies, is that you? despite that fact, my mind is on nothing but spring/summer and good weather. not exactly a good thing when you’re in finals. don’t get me wrong, i’m not spending my time playing outside, i’m just google-imaging photos of people playing outside. same diffy. here’s a music video from montreal’s THE BREEZES which also allows me to experience pleasurable sunny days from my cozy bed ..and not so cozy desk.

connan mockasin is the project of a new zealander, now based in london, who takes us on a ride with his psychedelic lo-fi rock. by accompanying his rather moody music with intriguing and colorful videos, he tells us a story and transports us to his imaginative realm. anyone can admit his high pitched trill is quite special. get lost in his surreal music videos (or short film, as this is 10min long), which are from his upcoming album, “Forever Dolphin Love”, to be released on march 28th.

the best sound in the world is that little *DING* my macbook makes when i’ve got a new email. except when i get spam saying “hi this is (insert obscure foreign name) from (insert obscure foreign country), and i have £1,000,000 waiting in a bank for you”.. such a tease. besides that garbage, JEANS WILDER’S EP entitled NICE TRASH arrived in my mailbox! being one half of wavves, and besties with best coast, he’ll already have a niche well cut out for him. there are still the fuzzy lo-fi beach punk vibes, but he also takes things slower, with chillwave~ tracks like blanket mountain and in my dreams. can i just add, the sampling is redonk! if you’re a fan of millionyoung and best coast, then you’ll probably dig this too! released with the cool kids over at atelier ciseaux, you can buy it here, and there’s a free track below.
