zubi always feeding this blog with a good dose of house! havent been to a strictly house event, a montreal favorite, in quite a while. this is putting me back in the mood, but the fact that a snowstorm is coming our way (WHAT THE SNOWFLAKE) is getting in the way, just a tiny bit.
montreal has the most beautiful of fall’s, and its also my favourite season because its the only appropriate time to whip out all of my go-to jackets. recently got this penfield vest from the dudes over at tiger distribution (who distribute many favorites in streetwear around canada : wesc, penfield, brixton and gram). not only is the down so, so cozy but the jamieson’s of shetland fair isle knit is such a cute add on!
this months copy of japanese publication, popeye, is pages and pages of lowdown on what to do in new york. im really curious to read more because there are SO many nooks and crannies in that wonderful city, that every time i go, my trip is completely different. after im done with this mountain of work, i hope to put together a little guide of my favorite things in the city. heres a band i discovered last time i was there: newyorklovediary (뉴욕러브다이어리). check out my favorite song by them HERE.
its definitely been a while since ive posted a mixtape for you pals. im currently in seoul, and i want to explode at how much i love korea. ive traveled quite a bit in my lifetime, but i can easily shoot this city to the top of my favorite list. right now im sitting in one of seoul’s kajillion adorable coffee shops, sipping on my second coffee (the second was “serviceuhhh” aka free, thank you^^). the entire city is very young, but this area in particular is filled with energy and young people 24/7, as well as cute coffee shops, live street musicians and bars. i thought i would make you a playlist of some kindie music, similar to the relaxing music heard in coffee shops. you already know i love 10cm, and yesterday in a coffee shop they only played 10cm just because i like them so much! download here : i hope you enjoy.
so thoroughly impressed with this 17 year old out of brooklyn. joey bada$$ leaves a lasting impression because i feel like what he does comes so naturally to him. i’m not one of those crazies going around saying ‘hip hop is dead’, but i do like how he breathes some fresh air back into an old school sound. plus, his verses are just too sharp; definitely mature beyond his years. to listen and for free download click here.
karen walker sunnies, zara top, zara jeans, michael kors watch, furla bag, clarks desert boots
pulled my usual houdini, and escaped to new york for the weekend. there was so much i wanted to do (and so much i was dying to blog about), but i ended up doing none of those things ha. oh well, there’s always next time. i did manage to grab quite a few yummy bites with my pal ernest, who always knows every yummy restaurant (in both ny, and montreal). a standout would have to be kin shop for a really quaint atmosphere and delicious thai food. sunday morning, we had yummy dim sum, which came out to a mere 27$ for a 4 person feast?! i also indulged and saw jay park + dumbfounded in concert. just melissa, myself and 1 million fainting, smelly, crying american teens.
i have a funny feeling that kura is going to make quite the ripple in the blog music scene in the coming months. the trio is from denmark, and has this spacey but smooth sound. if you like the xx, you will most definitely enjoy kura as well. the music video for anchor, directed by kristian touborg, is super intriguing. take a look and a listen! visit their facebook page for more info/songs.
jarco weiss, who is actually a longtime goldzmine reader, sent me the first music video from his brand spanking new band, marie madeleine. the trio describes their sound as disco wave; like if ian curtis and donna summer went on a date in palm springs. weiss is on vocals, greg wagenheim on bass, synth by herr 2003 and pauline grethen (not the gal in the video) is featured singing the hypnotic chorus. marie madeleine just put out their ep and plans (fingers crossed) on touring through europe, asia and north america during the next year or so. i quite like this sound; the epic zeus-like vocals mixed in with the flirty girly “sinking, sinking, dying, diving” is buckets of fun.
thanks to my friend, audrey, ive been pulled out of my music rut which has lasted for quite some time. i literally spent the summer listening to the same two songs on repeat. she introduced me to this korean duo, which goes by 10cm. together, kwon jung yeol and yoon cheol jong, make cute, catchy and honest ballads. i listened once, i listened 50 more times. download: americano and 오늘밤은 어둠이 무서워요.
their take away show was filmed by recandplay so i decided to look into this a bit more. they film bands and artists playing spontaneous sets in and around seoul, whether that be an echoey underpass or a cozy cafe. i discovered a ton of talented new acts, but the gorgeous gal of russian red (who is actually from spain) and her sweet voice particularly caught my attention.
stromae recently played a show here in montreal, and took some time out of his urban outfitters shopping spree to have a chat with me. honestly, im a big fan. ‘cheese’ is a great album that you should take the time to listen to! it also helps if you’re french speaking.. but even if you’re not, the music is great! throughout his show you could really tell how much of himself he puts into his music. he was continuously switching up his tracks, and kept the crowd guessing. everything was unbelievably well planned, including the set. the videos really dont do it any justice. the belgian mastermind even sang his most popular song ‘alors on dance’ with a holographic orchestra! there was, of course, ‘les lecons de stromae’ or lessons with stromae, which is when he literally remakes the song in front of you. so much respect. watch the video! i added english subs.
